Weekly Topic: Bone Broth for Dogs

7 Reasons why your pupper needs bone broth, no matter what age!

Benefits of Bone Broth explained:

Liver Detox

Glysine acts as a liver detoxifying agent and bone broth contains a large amount. Dogs, just like us, are exposed to chemicals everyday in normal ordinary households. Also, flea medications are filtered through your dog’s liver, so this yummy detox is perfect for them!

Digestive System

Natural Gelatin is one of the main ingredients rendered during the cooking process which helps with food sensitivities, digestion, and allergies.

Boosts Immune System

Remember when grandma used to make a big pot of chicken noodle soup for the sickies? When made with bone broth that soup is actually healing to your body and that goes for our puppers too!

Hydration and Electrolytes

Electrolytes rendered from the chicken feet are great for all dogs, but can be especially beneficial during illness.

NOTE: if you have a sick pup do not rely on broth alone for electrolytes, please seek advice from your vet.

Skin and Coat Health

If cooked properly bone broth contains lots of collagen for skin and coat health. If it doesn’t gel when refrigerated, it needs more collagen. Thats why I use chicken feet to make my broth. All those jointed toes and cartilage contain a ton of that gelatinous goodness.

Joint Health

Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Hyaluronic Acid are all in bone broth and are great for your dog’s joints.

Bone Health

Calcium, Phosphorus, and Magnesium make for healthy bones, but if you’re making your own dog food it is important to remember that bone broth is not an alternative to adding bone to a dog's diet.

The following is an example of the DNA pulled on our breeder Maximus:

Shedding

All dogs are not alike when it comes to shedding. In certain dogs, the amount of shedding is far greater than in others. In this article we will dive into the research that has identified a variant in the gene MC5R that can impact the degree of shedding in various breeds.

The SD Locus determines the scale of how much shedding there will be:

  • No copies of the variant (n/n) results in a very low propensity towards shedding.

  • One copy of the SD variant (SD/n) results in low to moderate shedding.

  • Two copies of the variant (SD/SD) results in a higher propensity towards shedding.

Animal Genetics offers testing to determine the number of copies of the Shedding allele a dog carries and the propensity towards shedding or not.

All pups at Edwood Acres are DNA tested for this shedding gene. In addition to this, we also test for genetic disorders and coat color. So you can be assured that our pups are not only beautiful, but truly happy, healthy, and ready to join your family.
